The Aroostook River

Flowing directly through Ashland, the Aroostook River is one of northern Maine’s premier trout rivers. Known for its scenic beauty and productive fishing, the river offers excellent opportunities for brook trout and landlocked salmon, especially during the spring and early summer months. The river system includes miles of fishable water, from gentle riffles and deep pools to long stretches ideal for wading and drifting flies.  

As water levels drop following spring runoff, dry fly fishing can become exceptional. Anglers regularly fish caddis, mayflies, and attractor patterns during active evening hatches throughout late spring and early summer.

Remote Trout Ponds & Wilderness Waters

One of the greatest advantages of staying near Ashland is quick access to the remote fisheries of the North Maine Woods. Within driving distance are countless trout ponds, small streams, and hidden waters that receive very little fishing pressure.

The nearby Deboullie Public Reserved Lands region is especially well known for its wilderness trout fishing opportunities. Remote ponds such as Pushineer, Gardner, Black Pond, and many others offer anglers a true backcountry fishing experience surrounded by rugged mountains and untouched forests. Several waters in the area are known for native brook trout and unique Arctic charr populations.  

For anglers willing to explore, it is possible to spend days fishing different waters without seeing another fisherman.

Fly Fishing Opportunities

The Ashland region provides excellent fly fishing throughout much of the season. Spring runoff creates productive streamer fishing on rivers and tributaries, while warming water temperatures bring excellent dry fly activity on ponds, rivers, and small streams.

Popular tactics in the area include:

• Nymph fishing in pocket water and riffles

Conditions can vary throughout the season, but late May through July is often considered one of the best times for active trout fishing in northern Maine.
